Preservation and Archiving Policy
ISSN: 2641-5013 | Publisher: Heighten Sciences Publication Incorporation | Preservation Partner: Portico
Purpose and Commitment
The International Journal of Clinical Virology (IJCV) is committed to ensuring the permanent preservation and accessibility of all its published content. The journal employs internationally recognized digital archiving systems, including Portico, LOCKSS, and CLOCKSS, to safeguard the scholarly record and guarantee continued access to articles, even in the event of technical failures or publisher discontinuation.
Preservation Objectives
- Ensure perpetual availability of all published research articles.
- Protect scholarly content from data loss, corruption, or technological obsolescence.
- Provide stable and verifiable links to archived versions through DOI and OAI-PMH metadata.
- Maintain long-term access integrity for all users, institutions, and repositories.
Primary Archiving System: Portico
IJCV’s primary digital preservation partner is Portico, a leading not-for-profit digital preservation service. Portico securely stores and migrates digital files to newer formats to ensure that the scholarly content remains accessible despite evolving technology.
All published articles and supplementary materials are deposited in Portico under the CC BY 4.0 license, ensuring perpetual access even if the journal ceases operations.
Secondary Preservation Systems
- LOCKSS (Lots of Copies Keep Stuff Safe): IJCV content is replicated and preserved across multiple library servers worldwide, ensuring redundancy and protection from data loss.
- CLOCKSS (Controlled LOCKSS): A decentralized preservation network that activates public access to preserved content in case of catastrophic failure or publisher unavailability.
Institutional and Self-Archiving
Authors are encouraged to deposit their published articles in institutional and disciplinary repositories in line with IJCV’s Repository Policy. All archived copies must include citation details, DOI, and the CC BY 4.0 license notice.
Metadata and Identifiers
Each article published in IJCV receives a unique Digital Object Identifier (DOI) through Crossref. Metadata such as title, author names, ORCID IDs, abstract, and license are registered with Crossref and exported through the journal’s OAI-PMH interface for harvesting by repositories and indexing databases.
Archiving of Supplementary Files
Supplementary materials—datasets, multimedia, and extended tables—are archived along with the primary article files in Portico. These materials are stored under the same license terms and linked through DOI-based metadata to preserve research context.
Version Control
All versions of an article (preprint, accepted manuscript, and Version of Record) are traceable through Crossref linking. IJCV ensures that any corrected, replaced, or retracted version retains metadata continuity with the original record for integrity and citation accuracy.
Disaster Recovery and Redundancy
In the unlikely event of server malfunction or data loss, IJCV maintains multiple mirror servers and backup archives to ensure immediate recovery. The redundancy protocol follows LOCKSS principles, maintaining distributed copies across geographic regions.
Access and Transparency
All archived content is open access and freely available under the CC BY 4.0 License. IJCV provides direct links to its preservation partners and displays the Portico seal on its website to confirm participation.

Preservation Workflow Summary
| Stage | System | Action | Frequency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Article Publication | OJS-PKP | Automatic metadata generation and DOI assignment | Immediate |

Long-Term Preservation Strategy
IJCV follows the Open Archival Information System (OAIS) Reference Model for digital preservation, which defines how data is ingested, managed, and disseminated securely over time. This strategy ensures adaptability to technological changes while protecting scholarly data integrity.
Audit and Review
The preservation infrastructure is audited annually by the publisher’s IT and editorial departments. Audit outcomes are documented internally to confirm the reliability of long-term storage and retrieval mechanisms.
Policy Review and Updates
This Preservation and Archiving Policy is reviewed every two years to ensure compliance with evolving open-access and digital-preservation standards. Updated information is published on the IJCV website, and authors are notified through editorial announcements.
